Vedas and It's Branches in Hindu Scriptures

The term Veda comes from the root Vid, to know. The word Veda means knowledge. The Vedas are the foundation scriptures of the Hindus.

Hindu Scriptures are classified into following divisions:

4 vedas called RAYS (Rigveda, Atharva veda, Yajurveda and samaveda.

4 Secular heads called SANK (Subhashitas, Alankaras, Naatakas and Kaavyas)

6 Orthodox heads - Kalas, Itihasas, Shruthis, Smrithis, Puranas, Agamas and Darsanas.

6 Vedangas - Shiksha, Vyakarana, Chandas, Nirukta, Jyotisha and Kalpas.

4 Kalpas known as Sutras - Srauta, Grihya, Dharma and Sulba.

18 Smrithis or Dharma Shastras

4 Itihasas - Ramayana, Mahabharata, Hari Vamsa and Yoga Vasishtha

18 Main Puranas and 18 Upa Puranas

3 Agamas - Vaishnava, Saiva and Sakta.

6 Darshanas (Schools of Philosophy) - Nyaya, Vaiseshika, Sankya, Yoga, Poorva mimamsa and Uttara mimamsa.
